Nylon Technical Textiles
Nylon fibers are formed
as a byproduct of petroleum and coal and this fibers we cannot see in the
natural environment therefore it is fully man made synthetic fiber. Nylon fibers
are today mostly used to produce various textile materials in the apparel
industry. The main reason is nylon fiber has good properties and they help to
increase functions and performance of output technical textiles. In the
manufacturing technical textiles, textile manufacturer care about of fiber and
composites properties and behavior. Hence they widely used nylon based
products. Now we look what nylon fibers properties. In the microscopic view we
can see fiber configuration as below. Above
diagram shows cross-sectional view of nylon fiber twofold as circular and regular tri-lobal
shapes. Longitudinal view can be explained as regular
and some nylons have speckled appearance due to delustering agents. And we can
see basic two forms of nylon fiber as nylon 6 linear polymers and Nylon 6.6.
This 6.6 polymer has linear chain with zigzag configuration which increases
higher stretchability and it is very important points for producing technical
textiles. Not only that, nylon
fiber is thermoplastic hence increase adhesive properties when composite making
because of melted fibers create strong bonds and strong composites increase
stability of composites. I above told zigzag molecular chain configure increase
streatchabily and high yield point and breaking strength. It is very good point
when produce car seat belts. In the home applications such as curtain materials
nylon fabrics are used because nylon can be easily wash and dry, not absorb
water, not retain dust, and mildew resistance and some fastness properties
increase durability. And not other material nylon is light weight hence easy to
handle in the home textiles such as curtains.
Other technical applications of
nylon we can see windbreakers, sleeping bags, tarpaulins. And also in the
agricultural textiles birds nets, covering pallets water repellence covers,
sunscreen and UV protection coverings and layers can be given. As a synthetic
polymer nylon used various technical textiles construction, aircraft, sports
materials, geo textiles, medical textiles, etc.
