Anthropometry in Ergonomics
structural anthropometric data and functional anthropometric data to design work places, machines, equipment etc.
For
an example can be considered each doors of sewing and factory area is designed
for entering for all employees. So in the dimension of entrance is designed by
considering common static length of human body.
In term “Anthropometry” human body
measurements are discussed. All anthropometric data can be collapsed in to basic
two groups and they are structural anthropometric data and functional
anthropometric data.
Structural
Anthropometric Data
These
body measurements are static and it means these types of measurements are
obtained in person in fixed. This may be standing or sitting position.
Structural anthropometric data very important for,
Design work places
Machines
Commonly
machines are developed to considering basic static dimensions of human body.
The best example is each sewing machine are designed to operate easily by
setting positions and this can be commonly seen in Sri Lankan apparel industry
just like Brandix intimate Katunayake plant’s sewing room.
Tools
and equipments
For
an example I can give scissor’s finger holes are designed by considering
standard dimensions of human fingers. And some hand shears handling area is
designed by considering static dimensions of hand’s palm.
Functional
Anthropometric Data
In
the anthropometry, measurements are taken on body positions and which results from
its movement and it means motions are called functional dimensions. Sometimes these
measurements may be variations or derivatives of static body measurements. Functional
anthropometric data very important for,
Design
workplaces
In
environment designing of sewing workplace commonly get certain gap between each
sewing machines and between each chairs because in sewing operation, machine
operator have to move/ turn here and there. The main reason is material
handling, feeding, and other operations of sewing.
Machines
Some
machines are produced by considering functional anthropometric data. The best
example is cutting machines are produced to feed here and there. Especially
rotary blade cutting machine can move easily by moving posture and it can be
hold easily when cutting process. And also modern straight knife machines are
designed to move here and there and can be cut each nook and corner of fabric
without fatigue.
Tools
and equipment
Some
tools are flexible and easy to operate and main reason is human body always
move when working. Vacuum cleaner can be
taken as somewhat flexible tool because vacuuming tube can be easily move here
and there when cleaning each nook and corner of workplace.
