I would like to appreciate the guidance and the solid theoretical base given by academic staff of the Department of Engineering Technology at The Open University of Sri Lanka. PREFACE
Industrial training is
an essential program and which can be predicated as the bridge connects theoretical
knowledge and practical environment. This report is a summary of the industrial
training experience in apparel technology. I have collected during 15 weeks of industrial
training contributing to XYZ Private Limited Katunayake. This report includes the summarized
details about the revelation during the industrial training apparel-I and experience
I gained in this 15 weeks period, problems faced and
way I solved them and brief detail about the company and the structure followed
by summary
on my practical training program. All the 15 weeks of the training
were spent at the XYZ Company. Revelation
to the professional environment endowed me with
experiences of working collaboratively in professional environment,
learning new methods used in apparel industry and applied the theoretical
knowledge I had gained from my university. I think I was able to solve
some existing issues in some recommendations also. Those experiences
are mentioned and stated in this report in a methodical manner. The first
chapter includes an introduction of the training establishment including
primary details such as organizational structure, plant locations, functions of
each division of labour and basic HR details of the XYZ Company. The
second
chapter describes the training experiences and a brief description of the
training and my experiences during overall department covering. The third
chapter concludes the report providing a summary of the work carried
out along with my point of view of the quality of training program and
suggestions to improvement.

CHAPTER 1
1 Introduction
XYZ
is the largest apparel solution company and the largest network in south asia. XYZ
has higher skilled workers. In Sri Lanka, XYZ lanka has different types of
plants and operational centers. And also XYZ was not isolated or allocated
business of one country because XYZ had largest apparel network in several
south Asian countries and they were Bangladesh, Nepal and India.
1.1 Vision of XYZ
Vision
is “to be the inspired solution of branded clothing”
1.2 Mission of XYZ
Mission
is to to help people and organizations to meaningful business with one another,
efficiently & effectively, using the most appropriate technologies.
1.3 Operational Area of XYZ
The
head office located in Colombo Sri Lanka and which was called cooperate office.
As well as Kaunayake had another office and which was known as front-end office.
Basically was found following varieties of XYZ group. Fast fashion also located
in Kaunayake. And basic part of Sri Lanka located in Kaunayake. I had chosen to
complete in-plant operation at The Open University of Sri Lanka with XYZ
apparel solutions limited- Sri Lanka.

1.4 Introduction of XYZ Sri Lanka
When
collecting basic information about XYZ Sri Lanka, following details were
collected. When asked definition of Sri Lanka was found definition as “casual,
comfortable clothing designed to be suitable both for exercise and every day
wear. XYZ Sri Lanka dealt with mainly Express, Dechathlon, Cotton-on, Amazon,
Gap, etc. This was not simple or individual process because it was run
alternatively or mainly combining basic three plants. First one was very
important and it was located in Kaunayake. 2nd plant was located in Katunayake
and 3rd plant located in polonnaruwa. Apart Sri
Lanka, XYZ had common disciplines and its own criteria such as XYZ logo, XYZ
anthem, etc. Before starting each XYZ offices and plants, XYZ song was played.
And in that time all employees was stand and respected to this anthem. This
song was played each morning time but after ending of plant, the national
anthem of Sri Lanka was played. But national anthem was not played in frontend
office. Because different top level was employed in this unit and was not seen
regular closing time. How ever again and again can be predicated certainly, XYZ
had higher discipline based clusters in plant.
1.5 Organizational Structure
XYZ
had highly specialized divisions of labour. Between top and bottom level of
organization service had been well specialized as given below.
1.5.1
HR- Manager
The
main role of human resource manager was included providing and hiring suitable
candidates into organization and using strategic plan control labour turnover,
absenteeism and manage any other HR related operations.
1.5.2
Supply Chain Manager
He
was responsible for process raw material path such as procurement handling,
sourcing, analytical procedure such as on time delivery, on time tracking, etc.
The main functions were on time tracking (OTT), on time delivery (OTD) managing
and all supply chain process balancing like sourcing, etc.
1.5.3
Planning Manager
He
was responsible for managing how to run samples, production between in and out
of organization through each operational process such as purchasing time,
cutting time, sewing, shipment plan, etc.
1.5.4
Merchandising Manager
Merchandising
process was each buying and selling process such as raw material purchasing,
costing, refers input bulk to plant combining supply chain sourcing team and
finished product selling to buyer and marketing purposes.
1.5.5
Plant Manager
The
main role was running Kaunayake, Katunayake, Polonnaruwa plants and control
plant based each managers and each level of operations without failure. Under
the plant general manager and following managers were employed.

* Finishing Manager

* I.E Manager ( Operations)
* Plant Engineer
Apart
these top levels, different types of assistant managers and executive were
found.
1.5.6
Finance Manager
Finance
division was found on Kaunayake but mainly finance was controlled from Colombo corporate
office through HR, marketing, merchandising or other related sources. Payroll
was done by human resources department such as collecting attendance and other
related leaves, benefits, etc.
1.6 Methods of payment wages
XYZ
payment also done according to shop an office employee’s act (No.19 of 1954).
All employees are categorized into different stages and different levels. When
searching such information by visiting organization here and there, following
oral details were recorded.

According
to the situation of each operation, this range may be changed because different
benefits, etc.
1.6.1
Overtime Payments
In
XYZ Sri Lanka overtime, cannot be seen on executive or higher level and can be
seen among normal workers. In normal overtimes are calculated as below.

(Basic Salary/200)* 1.5
After
counting overtimes total earnings are counted as,

Basic Salary + ((Basic Salary/200)*1.5) + Attendance Bonus – (Meals + 8% of
E.P.F)
For
shift workers, especially night shift worker were benefitted as following.
Overtime
= (Basic Salary /26)* 1.5
Therefore
total allowances were predicated as,
=
(Basic Salary+Normal OT+ Night or Holiday OT +Attendance Bonus) – (Meals + EPF)
Here
deducted 8% of E.P.F and meals deductions etc. And attendance bonus may loss
due to no-pay leaves, medical or any other related absent.
1.6.2
E.P.F Payments
Employee
provident fund contribution done according to the act number 15 of 1958. Total
E.P.F for month was 20% and it was processed by deduction 8% from monthly
salary of employee and 12% contribution of organization.
1.6.3
E.T.F Payments
Employee
trust fund payment done according to act no 46 of 1980. This contribution of 3%
of employee’s salary and no deduction from employee. It was mean E.T.F paid by XYZ
organization.
1.6.4
Leave and Operation (Working) Time
In
XYZ Sri Lanka, all Saturday and Sunday were leave for office workers higher
than staff officer. But for plant workers was worked 6 days a week from Monday
to wednsday 6AM to 6PM, Thursday to Saturday 6AM to 2.45PM and Sunday also
considered as leave day (off day). In XYZ, following leave types for permanent
employees were found.

(Were
entitled in the 2nd year of employment)
1.6.4.1
Maternity Leave (Female Only)
84
days maternity leave were to be granted for the 1st and 2nd
live births. And 42 days maternity leave were to be granted for subsequent
confinements.
1.7 Other Details
1.7.1
Meal Times
Breakfast
was served from 7.45 AM to 8.45 AM. Snack bar and juice bar were opened from
10.30 AM to 5.45 PM. And lunch was served from 12.00 PM to 2.00 PM. Facility
was made available for staff to order special meals and take home meals as per
available menu of the cafeteria service provider. Employees were requested to
stick to set times and ordering process accordingly will provide even future
anyone. Some rules were found when further distributing more information and
they were,
· All employees should use the provided
cutlery.

Expected to clean, respective eating
place after meal (Someone)

Since cafeteria seating is limited, must
be mindful and stick to allocated meal times.
1.7.2
Meeting Rooms
Meeting
rooms were booked through the system. And meeting schedules were arranged
according to the outlook mail request. In the XYZ Sri Lanka several meeting
rooms were found such as xxxxx, bbbbbb, cccccccc, dddddd, etc.
1.7.3
Transport
Transports
were twofold and they were staff category and normal employees. Normally for staff
category used A/C vehicles and for normal employees used normal buses.
1.7.4
Sports Facilities
XYZ
Kaunayake had sport ground, gymnasium and swimming pool. According to the
management instruction category wise employee used these facilities.
1.7.5
Welfare Society
XYZ
apparel solutions limited- Sri Lanka had its own welfare society. And they
collect some money each worker minimum 100 rupees for month (this was changed
due to employee category). Welfare society donated some fund/ money when
employee’s family funeral and amount of donation depended on contribution of
welfare society. Apart this they launched blood donation campaign, dansal, etc.
CHAPTER 2
2 Industrial Training Experience at
XYZ Sri Lanka.
2.1 Stores and Supply Chain area
After
merchandiser arranged certain criteria with XYZ Accenture team, after purchased
raw materials were tracked into stores there were main 3 stores 1st
one was Kaunayake and it was very small space. Next nearest place was Katunayake
stores were known as A00. Another place was Polonnaruwa stores were called A01.
When studying Kaunayake and Katunayake storing raw material process was same
structure. Raw materials were stored in racks according to the buyer wise. And
also used Colours, fabric types, trim types to further allocations. After
allocation of received raw material was used to next process was studied as GRN
process. It was mean goods received note process. In this process was added all
relevant details into computer aided system. Because top level persons analyzed
such detail and GRN should be at least received 2 days before planned cut date
in cutting room and which was called on time tracking (OTT). After GRN process, 40% of raw materials turn
to fabric inspection process. In practical movement of inspection process was
studied it as 4 point inspection method. And also fabric shrinkage test also
done for the requested fabric types. In this quality control process was
considered special details and these are buyer name, supplier, invoice number,
GRN number, PO number, fabric received date, inspected date of supplier

Order Placement
Order
placement was done according to the requirement of order and cutting room. Sometimes
according to the less capacity of stores, raw materials turned to the Katunayake
and Polonnaruwa warehouses. This procedure done according to the instructions
of merchandising department and supply chain department. When stores falls down
then other stored raw materials were transported to Kaunayake and Katunayake.
