Single Jersey Fabrics vs Double Jersey Fabrics

When we are considering single jersey and double jersey knitted fabrics we can differentiate them using knitting structure, properties, characteristics, surface appearance, etc. All of these data tabulated in below.

Single Jersey Fabrics

Double Jersey Fabrics

-          Single jersey fabrics are produced by using only one set of needles.

-          Technical front of fabric has “v” shaped appearance and back has “u” shape appearance of plain fabric.

-          Due to the one needle set knitting, light weight of fabrics can be seen but sometime it changes on yarn weight also.

-          Less security of each loops hence edge security is low and easy to remove interlooped yarns.

-          Easily ravel both widthwise edges after knitting

-          Higher stretchability on widthwise of knitted fabrics.

-          Good ventilation and good moisture transmission properties due to small air hole gaps or loosely packed loops.

-          Unicolour and colour stripe based fabric can be seen.

-          As single jersey examples, plain knitted fabrics and purl knitted fabric can be taken.

-          Double jersey fabrics are produced by using two set of needles.

-          In most double jersey fabric has front and back same appearance (interlock structures).

-          Due to the two set of needles knitting heavy weight fabric can be seen.

-          High security of loops can be seen according to interlocked loops on opposite direction on fabric.

-          Both edges are not ravel after knitting

-          According to interlock loops, stretchability is reduced.

-          Due to the tight interlocking each loops are tightly packed and less free spaces among loops and occur less ventilation and less moisture transmission.

-          Unicolour and colour stripe, advanced design based fabric can be seen.

-          As double jersey examples, we can categorized

·         Rib gated fabric

·         Interlock gated fabrics

·         Jacquard fabric
